For the most part, my friend Adel has been able to normally go on with his life even if he has been carrying the herpes simplex virus inside his body. He seems to be very jolly now and it is a sharp contrast to a few months ago when he was always looking sad and depressed. If you are lucky enough to have a yard, your puppies can also enjoy your good fortune. When the weather is good, she can play outdoors for hours on end. But just as you puppy-proof the inside of your house to make it safe for your puppy to roam around, you should do the same for your yard or the portion of it you will share with your puppy.

The first step is to put up a fence around your puppy’s designated area. A puppy running free can endanger itself and annoy your neighbors. So the fence should be tall enough so that your puppy (and the dog she becomes) can’t jump over it, strong enough so that your puppy can’t knock it over, and buried deep enough so that your puppy can’t dig under it. A well anchored chain link fence is a good choice.

Now look at the area you have enclosed, and evaluate it for any potential puppy hazards. The contents of your backyard garbage cans make a tremendously tempting target for your puppy’s attention, so either remove them or block them off in some way. Put locks on the gate and any tool shed or other enclosure you don’t want your puppy to explore. Fence off vegetable gardens or hedges or anything else you don’t want your puppy digging around. Be aware of which plants you have outside that are potentially toxic to your puppy (such as daffodils) and remove them entirely.

Now you can add things to your puppy’s portion of the yard. A sandy area can be your puppy’s bathroom. Teach her to always use this one place when she has to pee or poop, and if it’s the latter, clean up after her right away. If there is room, you can build your puppies a doghouse or a shallow pool for those hot summer days.

But as much as your puppy may enjoy this personalized amusement park, never let the yard be your puppy’s babysitter. You are still responsible for her well-being and happiness. Do not leave her unmonitored for long stretches of time. Check up on her regularly and make sure she is safe from passing wild animals, inquisitive children who might be tempted to let her out, and sudden changes in the weather. In short, give her the same attention you give her when she is indoors. In the end, there is no substitute for your love.
